New Zealand has three world heritage sites, 14 national parks and in total more than 17,000 protected areas covering almost a third of the country, safeguarding stunning scenery, important ecosystems, and places of historic and scientific interest. With spectacular rugged mountains, volcanic plateaux, glaciers, rolling hills, subtropical forests, lakes, picturesque fiords, vast open plains,  geothermal mud pools, geysers, hot springs and 14,000km of coastline it is no wonder Peter Jackson chose New Zealand to film Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings Trilogy there.
