Cinnamon Wild Yala - Accommodation
Situated adjacent to the boundary of Yala National Park, but also close to the beach and waters of the Indian Ocean, Cinnamon Wild Yala feels more like an extension to the park than a hotel. It started life as an eco-friendly resort for wild life enthusiasts but has recently undergone major reconstruction and refurbishment to become a world class game lodge, bringing architectural features of the wild into the rustic exteriors and luxury interiors.
Experience
Even though a stay at Cinnamon Wild Yala is all about the National Park experience, guests will still enjoy delicious cuisine in the Restaurant where a variety of both Eastern and Western delicacies is served.
The hotel offers a range of wildlife experiences both in and around Yala National Park; although the park is predominately known for its dense population of leopard it is also one of the most important bird watching areas in Sri Lanka, a jeep safari will give guests the chance to observe some 215 species of birds along with as many as 44 different mammals, if the leopard proves elusive there is still plenty to see, including elephant jackals, sloth bear and spotted deer, enough to keep wildlife enthusiasts very happy indeed. The team of naturalists from the hotel will be delighted to take guests on a guided walk along the nature trails around the property; trek around the lake and see a variety of birds and animals or cross the huge sand dunes down to the beach and Indian Ocean. Keen photographers are very well catered for with special safaris, accompanied by a dedicated naturalist, using a specially customised vehicle which makes taking photographs on the move easier. They even have top end Canon equipment for use by those who have left their cameras behind.
Yala National Park is also home to a significant Buddhist rock temple; Situlpawwa which was built in the 2nd century BC. The temple houses an intricate complex with the caves inside having been built for monks to live in. On the main temple walls there are paintings from the Anuradhapura period, significant in that very few from this time have been found.
In the evening, back at the resort, guests can spend a pleasurable evening in the observation bar on the top floor of the hotel, where they gather to enjoy a drink and talk about their day while looking out on the 360° view of the forest and ocean.
Accommodation
The 68 chalets, while rustic in design are all equipped with luxury amenities. The décor and interiors reflect the safari feel with animal prints on the walls, camp style furniture and beds draped with mosquito nets; floors are made from recycled wood. The 60 spacious jungle chalets are all situated inland amongst the scrub jungle and offer views of nearly 360 degrees over the surrounding land. 8 Beach Chalets are constructed on stilts and each has a private Verandah that opens out to a view of the Indian Ocean beyond.
