The long coastline which runs from the capital Colombo down to the historic city of Galle has something to offer for everyone who wishes to escape the chaotic atmosphere of the capital city. Bentota has a glorious stretch of golden sand and the area around is perfect for water sports, close by is Aluthgama with its bustling Monday market, or just inland the Galapota Temple which is said to date from the 12th century. It is also famous for the production of Toddy, Sri Lankas well known alcoholic beverage made from coconut nectar. For a peaceful afternoon on the river take a boat along the Bentota Ganga and meander through coves and islands which are home to a myriad of birds and wildlife. The coast continues south along the Indian Ocean, through sleepy Balapitiya, then the surfer’s paradise of Hikkaduwa until it reaches Galle.
