The island state of Singapore is a vibrant mix of cultures, languages and architecture, with a medley of old world Asian influence. Founded in 1819 as a British trading colony it is now, because of its strategic location, the busiest sea port in the world. It has a tropical climate, superb shopping, one of the world’s most diverse cuisines and where the call to prayer competes with the call of capitalism. Singapore is made up of 63 islands, and is separated from Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north. It is a land brimming with diversity, with a collage of cultures, languages, and architecture.
The four major races: the Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian live in harmony and create a model multi-racial society that is both diverse and cohesive. It is a lush green city where the roads are lined with trees and where the beautiful Botanical Gardens offer a green oasis and refuge from the bustle of the shopping of Orchard Road. Visits to Chinatown, the Malay district of Kampong Glam and little India offer a wealth of experience that is akin to travelling around a much larger land. It is now also possible to experience the thrill of Formula One motor racing as the first race to be held at night time takes place each September. Singapore has a wealth to offer even the most experienced traveller.
