Mustique
Mustique is a mere 1400 acres, less than 4 square miles, and dotted with around 100 private villas and 2 small hotels; the 17 room Cotton House and the 5 roomed Firefly Mustique. Mustique was once the most heralded of private islands; the hideaway of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowden; Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Bryan Ferry et al; you had to be known to someone to even be allowed to land there but these days most of Mustique’s 100 villas can be rented without a personal introduction and is a great deal more welcoming and accessible.
Experience
Whilst the island remains an exclusive playground of the privileged the place feels completely disinterested in celebrity and the real attraction is its understated and relaxed atmosphere; a place of unquestionable and pure relaxation. It is not a place for publicity seekers unlike many other islands in the Caribbean.
There are four restaurants, four bars( including the most famous bar in the Caribbean, Basils Bar), a handful of shops, a gym & Spa, nine beaches and no golf(unless you rent the only villa with its own private golf course – a one green, nine-tee course!), but there is tennis, horse riding, hiking, diving, fishing, sailing, plenty of water sports and lots fun things to do around the island such as fully catered, prepared and served picnics at remote picnic sites dotted around the islands beaches. There is a small museum, a library, an open-air cinema used twice a week and two Churches.
Accommodation
All the villas are fully staffed and you decide the level of catering you want or need. Villa sizes range from the intimate two bedroom cottages suitable for Honeymooners, couples or small families right up to the 8-10 bedroom private estates, some of which offer separate guest accommodation, private pools, tennis courts, gyms and media rooms.
