Kiba Point

Kiba Point is an exclusive-use retreat nestled in one of the most beautiful locations in the heart of a superb game-rich area. Positioned on the banks of the beautiful Rufiji River in the Selous Game Reserve, this small camp is perfect for families and small groups. Set a mile downstream from its parent camp, Sand Rivers, on a hillside above the river line, Kiba Point is effectively in a ‘private’ area of the Reserve as vehicles rarely venture. It is entirely run by local Tanzanians with the manager from Sand Rivers keeping a watchful eye from afar.

Kiba Point is about exploring at your own pace with a private guide and vehicle, accessing the hidden gems of this part of the Selous, with fabulous game sightings as well as great birding. For more spontaneity, guided walking safaris are a thrilling way to experience wildlife on foot. Spending the night fly-camping is an exciting and very different activity away from every day ‘modern life’. This is an east African passion and how things were done in the old days of safari. This activity is highly recommended as it’s a unique experience which allows guests to feel part of the huge African wilderness.

A real highlight at Kiba Point is a motorboat safari where guests have the opportunity to spend the day exploring the river banks for fabulous sightings of crocodiles, hippos and elephants. With total exclusivity for all activities, visits to Stiegler’s Gorge, Kidai Island, Hot Springs and Lake Tagalala can be arranged, or a fishing trip on one of the lakes, which are home to great volumes of cat-fish and the fierce tiger fish. Nothing is too much trouble at Kiba Point.

Kiba Point has four impressively large thatched cottages which are raised and are entirely open at the front to take advantage of the river views. Although there is heavy netting that can be zipped closed at night should guests prefer. Built with local materials - stone, wood, thatch and pebbles; they feel light and airy with cool elegant interiors, huge comfortable beds and colonial planters chairs. Deluxe bush bathrooms with hot/cold running water, flush toilets, indoor and outdoor showers are just one of the little luxuries here. Each room also has its own private deep plunge pool set into the large deck at the front to cool off and relax.

As the Rufiji River is only a few metres away, guests can sit and watch the life on the river from their large deck or from the pool. It’s not unusual for elephants to browse amongst the cottages, which is thrilling to be so close but yet perfectly safe. Local vervet monkeys are also regular visitors to the camp. The communal mess areas include a lounge, dining room, library and intimate bar all under a thatched roof, leading out to a large pool and gardens down to the river. The camp is available in its entirety to a single group of up to 8 people allowing for a very private and exclusive experience.
