Manda Bay
Manda Bay is a small private beach lodge on a secluded peninsular; there are miles of soft white sand, fascinating creeks and small islets to explore. It is close to ancient Lamu Town, but far enough away from the bustle to enjoy total privacy.
Experience
This is our favourite lodge or hotel on the African coast; we love it! It is incredibly relaxed; you don’t need to wear shoes or even flip flops the entire time you are there. It is almost impossible not to succumb to the chilled pace of Manda Bay. There is so much to do and you can choose to do as much or as little as you like. Manda Bay’s sheltered mangrove creek and calm waters are ideal for water skiing, snorkelling, windsurfing, banana boat rides and kayaking. Sailing is also on offer along with deep sea fishing, skiff fishing on the reefs, dhow cruises, kite-surfing and visits to the World Heritage Site of Lamu Town – which we strongly recommend. Perhaps surprisingly, there are also buffalo and a host of other wildlife inland from the lodge and a huge number of different birds; one of the highlights is to head off in a small motorboat to the tiny uninhabited islet 5 minutes away at sundowners to witness the arrival of the Carmine Bee Eaters coming in to roost; 10’s of 1000’s arrive; for almost an hour they swarm to the islet like locusts. There are some 9th century Manda ruins a short walk away, a couple of stunning sundowner spots, local walks and jogging routes and some knowledgeable staff who will talk you through the incredible stars, constellations and satellites clearly visible with the distinct lack of light pollution. The food is fantastic at Manda Bay; they make a real effort to source the best ingredients; it is either grown at the lodge or flown in. The seafood and fish is exceptional and delivered by local fishermen daily and there are plenty of beautifully prepared alternatives for vegetarians and carnivores alike.
Accommodation
There are 22 rooms in total at Manda Bay; 11 right on the seafront, 5 set slightly behind but with sea views and 6 smaller garden rooms which are designed for the children of larger families or a nanny at a cheaper rate. All have ensuite facilities and a veranda at the front. The rooms are built with local materials with palm thatched roofs and woven palm frond matting lining the walls and flooring. The rooms are very open in design to catch the refreshing sea breezes and there are swinging day beds to relax in the afternoon breeze.
